Lecture 1: From the Beginning to Finding My Passion in Pixels, My Journey in Quilting

My Guild Presentation explains my journey in quilting from my first quilt back in 2006 to finding my passion for designing and making pixel quilts today.  We will explore many of the tips, tricks and techniques I have learned the hard way in pixel quilts and the design process!

I  will also explain the pitfalls of pixel quilt design, particularly choosing the images that will get the best out of this unique quilting process. I will touch on my most popular pixel quilts, including the quilt requested by Queen Elizabeth, along with a trunk show of other quilts I have made and up and projects that I have on the go.

LENGTH OF PRESENTATION & FEE:
A 1 hour presentation plus questions is $300 USD, if you would like more details and to review my Speakers Agreement, just drop me an email. (in person talks are custom priced)

Yes! I offer workshops in both sewing and designing pixel quits, email me: dee@pixelquilts.com to find out further details

I only take on a couple of people per month to work with and design their quilts for them. (to be clear, I design and then send you the pattern to make!) The cost is $100. The process will involve you sending me 5-6 initial images, these images need to be clear, free from dark shadows, well lit and not blurry. Images from a physical photographs will need to be scanned in at the highest resolution.

If you have your heart set on one image, chances are you may be disappointed, especially if it is bad quality. Any kind of blur or shadows in a pixel quilt will make the image look muddy and you will not get the detail you need to make it recognizable.

I require a non-refundable deposit of $25 to start working on your images, after we have been through the process and you have chosen the quilt you would like to make, the cost will be an additional $75 paid before the pattern is sent. If you are interested in working together, please email me to see availability.

My custom quilts start at $3,000 with a $500 deposit. I only take on one or two custom quilts per year, please email me for more details: dee@pixelquilts.com

Maybe! I have created various sewing projects used in national media, drop me an email and we can get our heads together.

Maybe! Just drop me an email or send a message through social media and lets get our thinking caps on!

I have used stippling, straight line quilting and digitized designs on my personal pixel quilts.

I use to think that digitized designs would be too busy for a pixel quilt and would detract from the overall look of the quilt, but I was wrong!! In fact I now think the opposite! I love the added details that you can get it digitized designs!

Here are some examples of different types of quilting and the overall look of the quilt.

I usually try to stay within the colors of the quilts and usually opt for a colour that will blend in nicely with the main portion of the quilt.

Look…you may not like this answer, but you asked so I’m going to tell the truth!!

I only ever hand bind my quilts.

Meaning I sew the binding to the front of the quilt, fold it over and hand stitch it with tiny stitches to the back. I enjoy it, for me it’s the perfect end to a quilt, so if you are looking for machine binding tutorials, I am not your gal!!

You can try!! BUT bear in mind, in order to make most faces recognizable, you usually need all of the pixels in one quilt just for one person. As soon as you introduce two people into a pixel quilt, the amount of pixels per face is halved so it will potentially be more abstract and less detailed.

Feel free to play around though!!
